Verified Wisłoujście Fortress

Gdańsk, Poland, Poland

Wisłoujście Fortress in Gdańsk, Poland, stands as the oldest surviving coastal fortress on the Polish Baltic shore, strategically positioned at the mouth of the Martwa Wisła river where the Vistula once flowed into the Bay of Gdańsk.

Originally featuring a wooden structure in the 14th century after Teutonic control, it evolved with a brick lighthouse tower in 1482 for ship navigation and defense, later expanding into a square Fort Carré (1586–1602) modeled on French designs, complete with bastions like Artillery and Ostroróg.

Further rebuilt in the 1620s against Swedish threats with an Eastern Bulwark of five bastions and a Western one across the river, it earned the nickname "Gate to the Republic" for controlling merchant ships and repelling sieges, though it fell in 1734 to Russian forces after a grueling six-month defense.

Occupied by Prussians and Napoleonic troops who added ravelins and modernized it, the fortress served diverse roles over four centuries—from prison and hospital to lighthouse and warehouse—showcasing military architecture by Italian, Dutch, and French engineers, with key parts like the circular tower and moats enduring despite 1945 war damage.
