Wuzhen Water Town
Zhejiang, China
Wuzhen Water Town is a living tapestry of ancient China, woven with canals, stone bridges, and centuries-old wooden homes. Nestled in northern Zhejiang Province, between Hangzhou and Suzhou, it’s one of the most iconic and best-preserved water towns in the Jiangnan region—often called the “Venice of the East.”
With a history stretching back over 1,300 years, Wuzhen is divided by a crisscrossing river system into four sections: Dongzha (East), Xizha (West), Nanzha (South), and Beizha (North). Dongzha retains its original layout and offers a quieter, more traditional experience, while Xizha is more developed and atmospheric, especially at night when lanterns shimmer on the water and music drifts from teahouses.
Wuzhen is also a cultural hub. It’s the birthplace of revolutionary writer Mao Dun, whose former residence is now a museum. The town hosts the annual World Internet Conference and the Wuzhen Theatre Festival, blending ancient charm with modern creativity. You can stroll through museums dedicated to foot-binding, wood carving, and traditional beds, or watch artisans dye indigo cloth using centuries-old techniques.
