Zamek Kliczków
Kliczków, Poland, Poland
Zamek Kliczków in Kliczków, southwestern Poland, originated around 1297 as a stone-and-wood border fortress built by Duke Bolko I the Strict of Świdnica-Jawor on a high bluff above the Kwisa River to defend against Czech raids.
By the late 14th century, it lost military significance under Czech rule, becoming a noble fief managed by families like von Kittlitz and von Zedlitz before Henryk von Rechenberg acquired it in 1391, with his descendants holding it for nearly 300 years.
The Rechenbergs transformed it into a Renaissance residence in the late 16th century, adding wings, a chapel, and luxurious features visited by King Matthias in 1611, followed by 19th-century neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance expansions by the Solms-Baruth family including an English-style park, Lion Gate, and Jenny Tower.
Spared major war damage but looted postwar and partially burned in 1949, it was restored in the 1990s into Poland's largest historic hotel with over 120 rooms, blending medieval origins with opulent later styles.
