Zamek Krzyżacki w Olsztynku
Olsztynek, Poland, Poland
Zamek Krzyżacki w Olsztynku is a 14th-century Teutonic Knights' castle in Olsztynek, northern Poland's Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, built between 1350 and 1366 on a small hill by the river under komtur Gunther von Hohenstein as the seat of a commandry near the Mazovian border.
Designed as a rectangular quadrangle with thick stone-and-brick walls around a courtyard featuring arcades, a main residential wing with rib-vaulted cellars and chapel, and a gate tower integrated with town defenses, it hosted grand master Winrich von Kniprode upon completion.
Damaged in wars including 1410, adapted post-17th century by removing perimeter walls, rebuilt in neo-Gothic style in 1847-1849 as a school, and further altered after WWII, its Gothic remnants now form part of the local high school building.
