Zamek Niemodlin
Niemodlin, Poland, Poland
Zamek Niemodlin is a historic lowland castle in Niemodlin, southwestern Poland's Opole Voivodeship, originating as a 13th-century residential tower integrated into town defenses under Duke Kazimierz I of Opole, later rebuilt around 1450 into a Gothic palace with four chambers per floor and a chapel.
Under Balthazar von Puckler in the late 16th century, it transformed into a Renaissance quadrilateral residence featuring a new north-western wing with gate tower, spiral staircase, three-storey cloisters, and bastions, further expanded by 1618 with north-eastern and south-eastern wings including an open gallery.
Subsequent Baroque modifications around 1750 by Michael von Zierotin added decorative gables, mansard roofs, and an arcaded bridge, while 19th-century neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance alterations by the Praschma family included a raised chapel and modern utilities, leaving it as a unified Mannerist-Baroque palace now open for tourism after post-WWII institutional use.
