Zamek Ostrogskich w Warszawie
Poland, Poland
Zamek Ostrogskich in Warsaw, known as Ostrogski Palace or Castle, is a Baroque fortified residence built in the late 17th century on Tamka Street for Prince Janusz Ostrogski atop a high brick bastion overlooking the Vistula, designed by Dutch-Italian architect Tylman van Gameren.
Construction began around 1681 as part of a grander complex but was scaled back after Ostrogski's death, with only the northern pavilion completed on a terrace featuring a rectangular plan, protruding avant-corps topped by a pediment, and decorative sandstone balustrades.
Passing to families like Zamoyski and Czapski, it was remodeled by Józef Fontana in the 18th century, served as apartments, a military hospital, and music institute by 1859 before WWII destruction and 1949-1954 postwar reconstruction, now housing the Fryderyk Chopin Museum with late Baroque-Rococo-Classical interiors.
