Zamek Piastowski w Chojnowie
Chojnów, Poland, Poland
Zamek Piastowski w Chojnowie is one of Lower Silesia's oldest Piast ducal residences, originally constructed in the late 13th century as a Gothic stronghold on an irregular triangular plan with a cylindrical bergfried tower, gatehouse, and perimeter walls to defend the town founded by Duke Bolesław II the Horned.
Completely rebuilt in Renaissance style between 1546-1548 by Duke Fryderyk III of Legnica using architect Franciszek Parr after Hussite destruction, it formed a characteristic three-winged half-moon layout with a large southeastern bastion tower, decorative portals, and early Renaissance features.
Serving successive Piast lines through partitions and wars, it later decayed into partial ruin before modern preservation efforts, retaining significant architectural value amid Chojnów's historic center.
