Zhongshan Park

Beijing, China

Zhongshan Park in Beijing is a serene cultural haven nestled just southwest of the Forbidden City, offering a peaceful counterpoint to the grandeur of Tiananmen Square nearby. Once the site of the imperial Altar of Land and Grain (Shejitan), where Ming and Qing emperors made offerings to the gods of earth and harvests, the park was transformed into a public space in 1914 and renamed in 1928 to honor Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of modern China.

Spanning 23 hectares, the park is a blend of imperial architecture, classical gardens, and historical monuments. You’ll find ancient cypress trees—some over a thousand years old—alongside pavilions, rockeries, and flowerbeds that bloom with tulips in spring, thanks to a gift from the Princess of Holland in 1977.

The Zhongshan Hall, once a worship hall for emperors, briefly held Sun Yat-sen’s coffin after his death in 1925, adding a layer of revolutionary history to the site. One of the park’s highlights is the Forbidden City Concert Hall, a modern venue for classical music tucked within this historic setting. Visitors can also explore the Tanghua Greenhouse, the Huifang Garden, and the Peace Safeguarding Arch, each echoing a different chapter of Beijing’s past.
