Zhouzhuang Water Town, often hailed as “China’s No. 1 Water Town,” is a living canvas of ancient charm nestled in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province, about 30 kilometers southeast of Suzhou. With a history spanning over 900 years, it’s a quintessential Jiangnan water town—where stone bridges, narrow canals, and Ming- and Qing-era residences create a dreamlike world of reflection and rhythm.

The town’s most iconic feature is the Double Bridges—Shide and Yongan—built during the Ming dynasty. Their crisscrossing arches resemble an old Chinese key and were immortalized in Chen Yifei’s painting “Memory of Hometown,” which brought Zhouzhuang international fame.

Other highlights include the Shen House, once home to the legendary merchant Shen Wansan, and the Zhang House, a graceful riverside residence with a private boat dock and tranquil courtyard. Zhouzhuang is also steeped in culture. You’ll find Taoist temples like Chengxu Temple, teahouses perched on bridges, and performances of Kunqu Opera, one of China’s oldest theatrical traditions.

Local delicacies like Wansan pork hock and glutinous rice balls add flavor to the experience.
