Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan is a transcontinental country located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, bordering the Caspian Sea, Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Turkey, and Iran. The capital city is Baku. Azerbaijan is rich in oil and gas resources, and energy exports are central to its economy.
The country is officially secular, and has a predominantly Muslim population of about 10.3 million. Azerbaijan was part of the Soviet Union until 1991 and has since developed as a unitary republic. In recent years, it has experienced conflict with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh, but continues efforts toward peace and regional development.
