Solomon Islands
The Solomon Islands is a country made up of a double chain of volcanic islands and coral atolls in Melanesia, in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, to the northeast of Australia. Its capital is Honiara, located on Guadalcanal, the largest island. The population is around 830,000 as of 2025, and over 90% are ethnic Melanesians.
English is the official language, but many local Melanesian and Polynesian languages are spoken. The nation was a British protectorate until independence in 1978 and is a constitutional monarchy with the British monarch as head of state, represented locally by a governor-general.
The majority of Solomon Islanders live in rural areas and depend on subsistence agriculture and fishing. The country is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and played a notable role during World War II, especially during the Guadalcanal campaign.
