Tuvalu
Tuvalu is a small island nation in the central Pacific Ocean, consisting of nine tiny coral islands and atolls scattered over some 420 miles. Formerly known as the Ellice Islands, it gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1978. Its capital is Funafuti, with most government activities centered in Vaiaku.
The total land area is just 26 square kilometers, making it one of the smallest countries in the world by both area and population, with an estimated 2025 population of around 9,700. Tuvalu has no major rivers or streams; rainwater collection is essential for survival. Copra is virtually the only export, though income is also generated by leasing its coveted ".tv" internet domain.
The nation faces acute threats from climate change due to its low elevation, none of which rises above 4.5 meters.
