Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe and is the second-largest nation in Europe by area after Russia. The capital is Kyiv. The population is estimated at about 42–43 million people in 2025. Ukrainian is the official language. The country features wide, fertile plains, the Carpathian Mountains in the west, and major rivers such as the Dnieper.
Ukraine’s climate is mostly temperate. The country was part of the Soviet Union until 1991 and has experienced significant political change since gaining independence. Agriculture, mining, and heavy industry are important to its economy. Ukraine is known for its rich traditions, folk culture, Orthodox churches, and historical sites.
