Kyiv‑Pechersk Lavra, also known as the Kyivan Caves Monastery, is one of the oldest and most important Orthodox monastic complexes in Eastern Europe, founded in 1051 on the hills above the Dnipro River in the Pechersk district of Kyiv.

It consists of a large architectural ensemble including the Dormition Cathedral, the tall Great Lavra Bell Tower, many churches and administrative buildings, and an underground system of the Near and Far Caves, which were originally dug as cells and later became a necropolis where mummified monks’ relics are still preserved.

The Lavra became a major spiritual, cultural, and scholarly center of Kyivan Rus, producing chronicles, icons, and trained artists before suffering damage from Tatar invasions, fires, and later periods of suppression. Today the site functions both as an active monastery and as a state‑managed historical‑cultural preserve, housing several museums and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site together with St. Sophia’s Cathedral for its outstanding religious and historical value.
