St. Sophia’s Cathedral in Kyiv is a major historical and religious monument in the heart of the city, originally founded in the 11th century by Prince Yaroslav the Wise as the main church of Kyivan Rus and a symbol of the principality’s Christian power.

It was built in the Byzantine style, inspired by the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, and later remodeled in the 17th–18th centuries with Ukrainian Baroque elements, giving it a distinctive silhouette with multiple domes and a tall bell tower. The cathedral is especially famous for its well‑preserved interior, which contains one of the world’s largest and best‑preserved collections of 11th‑century mosaics and frescoes, along with marble panels and intricate icon‑array imagery.

Today the building functions not as a regular parish church but as a museum and part of the National Sanctuary “Sophia of Kyiv,” housing exhibitions on Kyivan Rus culture and the cathedral’s history, and it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized both for its unique architecture and for its role as a spiritual and political center in early East Slavic history.
