Aghjkaberd Fortress
Armenia, Armenia
Aghjkaberd Fortress, also called Aghjka Berd or “Girl’s Fortress,” is a medieval Armenian stronghold in the Tavush Province of Armenia, located in the Aghstev River valley about 16 km southwest of Ijevan near the village of Aygedzor.
The fortress sits on a forested mountain peak surrounded on all sides by high cliffs and steep slopes, making it naturally inaccessible and impregnable, and in addition to this natural protection it was further fortified with artificial, pyramid‑shaped stone walls and a small guardhouse at the entrance.
All structures inside, including residential buildings, water reservoirs, a bathhouse, and a church, were built from bluish basalt, and the cross‑shaped church dates to the 10th–11th centuries, marking the site as an important medieval ecclesiastical and military center. The fortress was also known as Kayen and served as the residence of local lords of the region, and its strategic position in the Aghstev valley gave it great defensive value as a key stronghold controlling movement through the surrounding mountains and valleys.
A popular legend tells that a beautiful girl or princess lived in the fortress, and when Timur (Tamerlane) sent soldiers to capture her, she was rescued by a shepherd who killed the soldiers and brought her back; after this event, the fortress came to be known as Aghjkaberd (“Maiden’s Fortress”), and other versions say that the princess built the fortress and gathered an army to defend herself against princes who tried to take her by force, reflecting the site’s symbolic role as a refuge and place of strength.
