Ahlden House
Ahlden, Germany, Germany
Ahlden House, known as Schloss Ahlden, is a Renaissance-style stately home built in 1549 as a water castle on the Aller River in Ahlden, Lower Saxony, Germany.
Originally a three-winged timber-framed mansion with brick elements on a former moated site near the shifted river course, it gained fame as the lifelong prison of Sophia Dorothea of Celle from 1694 until her death in 1726, after her separation from future King George I of Britain.
Now privately owned and functioning as an art auction house since 1975, the preserved complex hosts cultural events amid its historic courtyard, once part of a medieval castle that fell into Welf hands by 1431.
