Verified Airlie Gardens

Wilmington, North Carolina, United States

Airlie Gardens in Wilmington, North Carolina, was established in 1886 as a private garden estate by Sarah Green Jones and her husband Pembroke Jones, inspired by their Scottish family home named Airlie.

Over the early 20th century, the gardens were transformed into a picturesque Southern garden rich with azaleas, camellias, magnolias, palms, and wisteria, guided by German landscape architect Rudolf Topel.

The estate grew to include lakes, tree-lined paths, and elaborate floral displays, attracting many visitors including prominent social figures. After changing hands several times, the gardens became a public park in 1999 when New Hanover County purchased 67 acres for restoration and management.

Today, Airlie Gardens offers a blend of natural beauty and cultivated landscapes, including the iconic ancient Airlie Oak, installed sculptures, and wildlife-viewing opportunities along Bradley Creek. The gardens host seasonal festivals and events, reflecting a deep history intertwined with community involvement and horticultural excellence.
