Al‑Mada'in, historically known as Ctesiphon, is an ancient archaeological site located southeast of Baghdad on the banks of the Tigris River.
Once the capital of the Parthian and later the Sasanian empires, it was one of the most important political, cultural, and commercial centres of the ancient Middle East. The site is best known for the monumental Taq Kasra, a massive brick arch that is one of the largest surviving structures from the Sasanian era and remains a striking symbol of Iraq’s rich historical heritage.
