Alamut Castle
Iran, Iran
Alamut Castle is a ruined mountain fortress nestled in the Alborz Mountains of northern Iran, near the village of Gazor Khan in Qazvin Province, about 100 kilometers northwest of Tehran.
Built in the 9th century on a steep, 2163‑meter‑high rock, it was originally a small strategic stronghold but gained legendary status when the Nizari Ismaili leader Hassan‑i Sabbah seized it in 1090 and turned it into the headquarters of the so‑called “Assassins,” a secretive sect of Nizari Ismailis.
The castle was designed to be nearly inaccessible, with only one narrow, winding path to the entrance, and for over two centuries it served as a center of religious and political power, diplomacy, and learning, even housing a substantial library.
In the 13th century Mongol forces under Hulagu Khan captured and largely destroyed Alamut, and today only archaeological remains and scattered walls stand on the summit, preserved as a national monument and a dramatic, cliff‑top site for history and trekking enthusiasts.
