Kohandezh Tous Castle, also known as the Citadel of Tus, is an ancient fortress located within the historic city of Tus near Mashhad in northeastern Iran. The castle formed the fortified center of the city and played an important defensive and administrative role during various periods of Iranian history. Built using mud-brick fortifications, the citadel was part of the larger urban complex of Tus, a major cultural and political center on historic trade routes. The city is especially famous as the home of the legendary Persian poet Ferdowsi and remained an important settlement for centuries before suffering devastation during the Mongol invasions in the 13th century. Today, the remains of Kohandezh Tous Castle offer visitors a glimpse into the rich history of ancient Khorasan.
