Alpengarten auf dem Schachen is a high-altitude alpine botanical garden located near Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany's Wetterstein mountains, at around 1,860 meters elevation, serving as an outpost of the Munich-Nymphenburg Botanical Garden.
Established in 1901 on about two hectares of land adjacent to King Ludwig II's King's House on Schachen, it showcases over 1,000 plant species native to the Alps as well as rarities from the Himalayas and other regions, thriving in the natural alpine conditions where lowland gardens cannot succeed.
Open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during summer months (mid-June to early September), it offers stunning panoramic views of peaks like Zugspitze and Alpspitze, and is reachable only by a 3-4 hour hike from trailheads such as Elmau or Mittenwald along the historic Königsweg path.
