Alte Burg Neustadt-Glewe is Mecklenburg's oldest and best-preserved medieval fortress, built around 1250 by the Counts of Schwerin on an Elde River dune as a brick stronghold with an Old House for servants, New House for dukes, ring wall, gate, walkways, keep, dungeon, knight's hall, and medieval toilets.
Remodeled in the 16th century with a living hall and dungeons, it endured centuries of changes including as a residence before full renovation since 2006, revealing Gothic-Renaissance wall paintings and a unique warm-air heating system in the Hofstube.
Today it houses a museum on castle and town history, art exhibitions, a historic beer cellar restaurant in the Old House, and tourist information, offering tower tours with dungeon access.
