Altena Castle
Altena, Germany, Germany
Altena Castle in Altena, Germany, is a striking medieval hilltop fortress built around 1108 by brothers Adolf and Everhard von Berg on the Klusenberg slope overlooking the Lenne River valley in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Originally a stronghold for the Counts of Berg who later became Counts of the Mark, it served as their residence before transitioning to a bailiff's seat, prison, poorhouse, and hospital after a 1455 fire left it partially rebuilt.
It gained worldwide fame in 1914 as the site of the first permanent youth hostel founded by Richard Schirrmann, now preserved as the World Youth Hostel Museum alongside exhibits on regional history, wire-making, and medieval life, accessible via an adventure elevator.
