Anhalt Castle
Harzgerode, Germany, Germany
Anhalt Castle is a ruined medieval fortress near Harzgerode in Germany's Harz Mountains, built around 1123 by Albert the Bear on the Großer Hausberg hill above the Selke Valley as one of the region's mightiest strongholds, comparable in scale to Wartburg.
Constructed unusually from brick with a 543-meter dry moat and outer rampart, it was devastated in 1140 during Saxon power struggles but swiftly rebuilt, serving the Ascanian dynasty until its abandonment by the 14th century.
Today its evocative remnants amid the Harz/Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park offer hikers panoramic views and a namesake link to the state of Saxony-Anhalt on marked trails from Meisdorf and Mägdesprung.
