Verified Aragonese Castle

Venosa, Italy

Aragonese Castle in Venosa, Italy, was constructed starting in 1470 by Duke Pirro del Balzo during the Aragonese rule as part of a larger fortification plan. The fortress has a square layout with four cylindrical corner towers, surrounded by a deep moat and accessed via a drawbridge. The Del Balzo family coat of arms, a radiant sun, is visible on one of the towers.

Over time, the castle was transformed into a noble residence with additions such as an internal Renaissance-style loggia, a north-east wing, and bastions that served as prisons. The site also hosted the Accademia dei Rinascenti from 1612 onwards. Inside, the castle houses the National Archaeological Museum of Venosa, showcasing Roman artifacts and other historical findings from the ancient city of Venusia.

Outside the castle lies a public square and a monumental fountain gifted by King Charles V. The castle's history reflects its military origins as well as its cultural significance in the region.
