Forte Marghera
Venice, Metropolitan City of Venice, Italy, Italy
Forte Marghera is a large 19th-century fortress located in Mestre, on the mainland side of Venice. Built between the Napoleonic and Austrian periods, it formed a key part of the defensive system designed to protect Venice from land attacks and control access to the lagoon. Set among canals, moats, and green spaces, the fort was used for military purposes for much of its history before being transferred to the Municipality of Venice and transformed into a public cultural area. Its historic buildings, earthworks, and fortifications make it one of the best-preserved military sites in the Veneto region. Today, Forte Marghera serves as a vibrant center for culture and recreation, hosting art exhibitions, museums, events, and Biennale projects. Visitors can explore its historic military architecture while enjoying open-air spaces, walking paths, and views of the lagoon environment.
