The Aragonese Castle of Otranto is a striking fortress that dominates the historic center of Otranto on Italy’s Adriatic coast.

Although a castle existed on the site from the Norman period, the structure seen today was largely rebuilt and strengthened by the Aragonese rulers in the late 15th century after the Ottoman occupation of Otranto in 1480. Designed to defend this strategic coastal city, the castle features massive walls, cylindrical towers, bastions, and a deep moat.

Its layout was adapted over time to withstand artillery attacks, making it an important example of Renaissance military architecture.
