Arboretum Burgholz
Wuppertal, Germany, Germany
Arboretum Burgholz is a large forestry research and display forest near Wuppertal in North Rhine‑Westphalia, Germany, covering about 200–250 hectares within the larger Staatsforst Burgholz.
It was first planted around 1900 to test how exotic tree species from Europe, Asia, and North America grow under local conditions, and it has since become Germany’s largest collection of foreign tree cultivations with more than 100–130 different deciduous and coniferous species spread across several themed areas.
The site is open to the public every day free of charge, with marked hiking trails that let visitors explore tall “foreign” trees such as monkey‑puzzle trees and coastal redwoods mixed into the native beech forest, while also serving as an outdoor classroom and experimental area for adapting forestry to changing climate conditions.
