Arboretum Freiburg- Günterstal
Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, Germany
The Arboretum Freiburg-Günterstal is a 100-hectare arboretum maintained by the University of Freiburg, located in Günterstal within the Städtischen Forstamt Freiburg at Günterstalstraße 71, Freiburg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and open daily without charge.
Founded around 1896 when its first Douglas fir plantations were created to investigate their uses in local forestry, the arboretum represents nearly 130 years of cultivating trees and shrubs from around the world. Today it is jointly managed by the university's Forstbotanischen Institute and the Freiburg Botanic Garden, cultivating approximately 1,300 tree and shrub species from 60 countries across 5 continents.
The arboretum houses Germany's largest living collection of fir/tanne species (Abietum), making it nationally and internationally significant for botanists, and includes impressive mature specimens such as Abies nordmanniana, Cedrus atlantica, Douglas fir, Sequoiadendron, various North American pines, and deciduous trees like black walnut and red oak. Two 2-kilometer walking paths and five themed trails maintained by the Forstamt Freiburg provide identifying information about trees from around the world, North American tree species, native tree species and their uses, and trees as plant healers.
