Arboretum Habichtsborn, also known as Arboretum Staufenberg, is a historic tree collection located in Escherode, Lower Saxony, Germany, several kilometers southeast of the town of Staufenberg. Founded in 1850, the arboretum is owned by the Niedersächsische Landesforsten (Lower Saxony State Forests) and contains around 1,200 labeled trees representing 178 species and 210 varieties of woody plants from various continents. Its most notable trees are three giant trees (Mammutbäume) planted around 1850, along with white cedars and coast cedars from North America, Japanese protector trees, and tulip trees. The site houses approximately 180 different tree species, with some specimens over 150 years old, and includes a drinking water source called Habichtsborn that gives the arboretum its name. Visitors can explore an educational area featuring a "Mittelwald" (historical forest form) created for training purposes, and the arboretum is supported by a volunteer association while regularly propagating saplings from its 19th-century trees to preserve its diverse collection.
