Arctic–Alpine Botanic Garden
Tromsø, Norway, Norway
The Arctic–Alpine Botanic Garden in Tromsø, Norway, is the world’s northernmost botanical garden, located just southeast of the University of Tromsø Campus and operated by the Arctic University Museum of Norway. It opened in 1994 on the site of an old farmhouse and showcases a unique collection of Arctic, alpine, and cold-climate plants from all continents across the Northern Hemisphere, including Arctic, Antarctic, and mountain regions. The garden features 25 to 27 themed collections arranged in naturalistic rock landscapes with lakes, streams, and forest areas, plus a special Norwegian Traditional Garden with over 600 plants from old Northern Norway gardens and a unique area displaying native herbs. Despite being above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø’s milder climate and abundant summer light—including midnight sun in May–July—allow thousands of colorful plants to thrive, with blooming typically beginning in early May and lasting until snow arrives in October. The garden has no gates or fences, is open 24 hours a day year-round, has free admission, offers beautiful views of surrounding mountains and fjords, and includes a café in a reconstruction of the historic Hansine Hansens Farmhouses that once stood there.
