Ardeck Castle
Holzheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, Germany
Ardeck Castle near Holzheim in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is a small 14th-century hilltop ruin first documented in 1395, likely built by Count Adolf of Nassau-Dillenburg as a border fortification against the Counts of Katzenelnbogen while monitoring routes from the Aar Valley to Limburg.
Owned by the Counts of Diez from 1467 until their line ended in 1727, it then decayed rapidly—described as fully ruined by 1740—leaving today only a roughly rectangular curtain wall around the plateau and a striking 21-meter-high, five-story bergfried tower lacking stairs, now owned by Holzheim municipality.
Popular with hikers, the site hosts the biennial Ardeck Castle Festival featuring outdoor comedies on one of Rhineland-Palatinate's largest amateur theater stages during odd-numbered years.
