Are Castle
Altenahr, Germany, Germany
Are Castle, perched at 240 meters above Altenahr in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate, is a ruined hilltop fortress built around 1100 by Count Dietrich I of Are and first documented in 1121.
Donated to the Cologne church in 1246, it grew into a key bulwark, administrative center, and prison for the archbishops until French troops conquered and ravaged it after a nine-month siege in 1690, leading locals to demolish it further in 1714.
Renovated in 1996 with stabilized walls, chapel fragments, and a rediscovered well, the site now rewards hikers with sweeping Ahr Valley views amid vineyards and trails.
