Verified Arg e Googad

Iran, Iran

Arg e Googad (also spelled Gouged, Googad, or Guged Stronghold) is a historic adobe and mud‑brick fortress located just outside the city of Golpayegan in Isfahan Province, central Iran, and it is one of the largest traditional mud structures in the country.

Built roughly 400 years ago, likely in the early Safavid period, Arg e Googad was originally designed as a dual‑use building: a military citadel to protect against enemies during war and a secure caravanserai where wealthy merchants could stay safely along important caravan routes, with towers on each side about 12 meters high used for guarding and defense.

The stronghold’s layout is a square courtyard surrounded by symmetrically arranged towers and rooms; the upper levels were inhabited by merchants and important people, while servants and livestock were housed on the lower levels, and the design even included practical defensive features such as a water pool atop the entrance gate whose water could be poured to extinguish a fire set by attackers, wells for water storage, and the use of pigeons whose disturbed behavior would signal an approaching danger.

After a period of decline and damage, Arg e Googad was restored and converted into a 3‑star traditional hotel and eco‑lodging complex, offering about 19–20 equipped rooms, a restaurant, a teahouse, and a large courtyard, while still preserving its historic architecture and allowing visitors to explore its cultural and military heritage as a living example of early Iranian fortification and caravan hospitality.
