Arlington Garden
California, United States
Arlington Garden in Pasadena, California, is a three-acre public garden located on land that was once the site of a grand mansion known as the Durand House, built in 1904 and demolished in 1964.
The lot remained vacant for decades after plans for a freeway were canceled. In 2005, local community members, inspired by the Mediterranean garden style, transformed the space into a water-wise, climate-appropriate garden showcasing California-native plants, including succulents, citrus trees, and flowers like poppies and sunflowers.
The garden promotes urban wildlife habitat, regenerative gardening techniques with no chemicals, and offers a peaceful, accessible green space for visitors, including art installations like Yoko Ono’s Wish Tree and a labyrinth for slow walking.
