Atashgah Castle (often called Atashgah) is an ancient Sasanian-era fortress built on a steep rocky cliff near Kashmar that was chosen for its natural defensibility, with sheer precipices on three sides and re-enclosing cliffs and walls that make access difficult.

Constructed by Sasanian authorities, the site functioned as a military stronghold and local power center, and nearby ruins — including a fire-temple, a large cave with carved figures, and remnants of defensive works — attest to its regional importance in late antiquity.

The castle’s position and design show careful site-selection and engineering to maximize resistance to attackers, putting it in the same class of inaccessible fortresses as famous Iranian hilltop strongholds. Today Atashgah is visited for its dramatic setting and Sasanian-era remains, and it remains an important archaeological and historical landmark in Khorasan Razavi province.
