Attock Fort
Pakistan, Pakistan
Attock Fort is a 16th-century fortress built between 1581 and 1583 on the orders of Mughal Emperor Akbar to protect the strategic crossing of the Indus River at Attock Khurd in Punjab, Pakistan.
It was designed by Khwaja Shamsuddin Khwafi and served as a key defensive stronghold against Afghan invasions. The fort features massive stone walls stretching about 1,600 meters in circumference, with four main gates named Lahori, Kabuli, Delhi, and Mori, each flanked by bastions. Its design reflects a blend of Mughal military architecture and Persian aesthetics, including guardrooms, barracks, and a Turkish bath.
Over the centuries, the fort changed hands several times, being captured by the Marathas, Afghans, Sikhs, and later the British, and after Pakistan’s independence, it became a military headquarters. Its position along the Indus and its strong fortifications made Attock Fort a vital military and administrative site historically, which still holds significance today under Pakistan’s Special Services Group.
