Avarsin Castle
Qalehlu, Iran, Iran
Avarsin Castle (Qal‘eh Avarsin) is an ancient hilltop fortress near the village of Avarsin in Kaleybar County, East Azerbaijan Province, Iran, whose surviving walls, towers and rock-cut stairways sit among steep mountainous terrain and once enclosed an area roughly 300 by 100 metres.
Archaeological finds—including pottery sherds and ceramic types—indicate the site was used from the 1st millennium BCE through later historical periods, with some scholars linking its construction or significant use to pre-Islamic eras such as the Sasanian or Parthian periods.
The ruin’s notable features include a northern watchtower beside the original entrance, remnants of defensive walls, and southern cellars and water-storage structures, all of which show how the builders adapted the natural rock and cliffs for defense and domestic needs. Today Avarsin is visited for its dramatic setting above the Aras/Khosrow valley and for its value to regional archaeological study of fortified settlements in northwestern Iran.
