Azhdeha Peykar Castle
Iran, Iran
Azhdeha Peykar Castle, meaning "Dragon Body Castle," is a historical fortress located in Larestan County, Fars Province, Iran. Its origins date back to the Sasanian Empire period (224–651 CE), and its structure spans about 700 meters in length and 170 meters in width, built on a high hill north of the city of Lar.
The castle features three main sections, including a stone wall and two towers, and was used for residential purposes during its prime. It contained various old structures such as a mosque, bath, crypt, well, and water storage facilities. The castle earned its name due to its dragon-like shape, and it has been inhabited intermittently until the 20th century.
Today, much of the castle lies in ruins with remnants like a well and clay walls still visible. Archaeological excavations have revealed its extensive history, including continued use from the pre-Islamic Sasanian era through to the late Qajar dynasty, making it an important cultural and historical monument in southern Iran.
