The Shrine of Baba Farid in Pakpattan, Punjab, is one of South Asia’s most revered Sufi sanctuaries—a spiritual epicenter that has drawn pilgrims, poets, and seekers for over seven centuries. Dedicated to Hazrat Baba Fariduddin Ganjshakar (1173–1266), a towering figure in the Chishti Sufi order, the shrine is both a sacred space and a cultural cornerstone of Punjabi identity.

Originally known as Ajodhan, the town was renamed Pakpattan—meaning “Pure Ferry”—in honor of the saint’s spiritual legacy. The shrine complex includes Baba Farid’s white marble tomb, a mosque, langar halls, and the famed Behishti Darwaza (“Gate of Paradise”), which devotees pass through during the annual urs festival, believing it brings blessings and spiritual elevation.

Baba Farid’s influence transcends religious boundaries. His Punjabi verses are enshrined in the Sikh holy scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, and his teachings of humility, love, and service continue to resonate across faiths. The shrine has historically served as a center of social justice and spiritual authority, even commanding its own autonomous territory in earlier centuries.
