Babak Castle (Ghal’eh‑e Babak) is a dramatic mountaintop fortress in northwestern Iran’s Arasbaran region near Kaleybar, famed as the stronghold of the 9th‑century rebel leader Babak Khorramdin who led the Khurramite resistance against the Abbasid Caliphate.

The ruin sits high in the Qaradagh (Arasbaran) mountains at roughly 2,300–2,700 meters elevation, protected by steep gorges and oak forests, which made it strategically defensible and difficult for attackers to reach. Archaeological and historical accounts connect the site to Parthian and Sasanian building phases, although it is best known for its association with Babak’s twenty‑plus years of resistance (circa 816–837 CE) and its ultimate capture by Abbasid forces.

Today the stone remains, narrow approach routes, and panoramic vistas make Babak Castle both a powerful symbol of resistance in Iranian cultural memory and a popular, though strenuous, destination for visitors and trekkers to the region.
