Babak Fort
Iran, Iran
Babak Fort, also known as Babak Castle, is a large ancient fortress perched at an altitude of about 2300 to 2600 meters in the Arasbaran forests near Kalibar in East Azerbaijan Province, Iran.
Built primarily during the Parthian dynasty with modifications in the Sasanid era, the fort is surrounded by deep gorges 400 to 600 meters in depth and difficult terrain, which made it nearly impossible to capture. It was a stronghold for Babak Khorramdin and the Khurramites, who led a resistance against the Abbasid caliphate for over two decades during the 9th century.
The castle's defensive design includes a tortuous, narrow passageway, a 200-meter corridor-shaped temple, and lookout towers strategically placed to monitor and repel attackers from a distance.
The complex had multi-story structures, storerooms, water reservoirs collecting rain and snowmelt, and living quarters built for long-term habitation. Today, much of the eastern part remains intact, and the fort stands as a symbol of Iranian resistance and architectural ingenuity from ancient times, offering captivating views of the surrounding forests and mountains .
