Badshahi Mosque
Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan
The Badshahi Mosque in Lahore is a towering symbol of Mughal grandeur and one of Pakistan’s most iconic landmarks. Commissioned by Emperor Aurangzeb in 1671 and completed in just two years, it was built to commemorate his military campaigns and stands directly opposite the Alamgiri Gate of Lahore Fort—a deliberate alignment reflecting imperial power and spiritual authority.
Constructed from red sandstone with intricate white marble inlay, the mosque features three majestic domes and eight minarets, four of which soar to nearly 60 meters. Its vast courtyard, capable of accommodating up to 100,000 worshippers, is among the largest in the world.
Over the centuries, the mosque has witnessed dramatic shifts—from being used as a stable during Sikh rule to a garrison under the British. Restoration efforts began in the 20th century, and today it stands fully revived, hosting daily prayers and major religious festivals.
