Bailey Arboretum in Lattingtown, New York, is a 42-acre living museum on the former estate of Frank and Marie Louise Bailey, who donated the property to Nassau County in 1968.

Frank Bailey, an amateur botanist and horticulturist born in 1865, purchased the estate in 1911, named it Munnysunk, and created one of America’s earliest private garden museums with a vast collection of rare trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants including imports from France.

The arboretum is noted for its unique collection of over 200 species of registered trees, including champion trees like a dawn redwood with the largest girth recorded worldwide, planted from seeds collected in China in 1947. It features specialized gardens such as a sensory garden designed for visitors with disabilities, and the Children’s Habitat, an accredited outdoor classroom endorsed by the Arbor Day Foundation. The arboretum also preserves a whimsical miniature German castle near the play area, recently restored to enhance its charm for families.

With walking trails, natural habitats, and educational facilities, Bailey Arboretum serves as a serene place for nature appreciation, learning, and community engagement.​
