Balboa Park
San Diego, California, United States
Balboa Park in San Diego, California, was set aside in 1868 as a 1,400-acre public park known originally as City Park.
It transformed from a scrub-filled mesa into a lush cultural park through the vision and efforts of civic leaders such as Kate O. Sessions, who leased land to grow and plant thousands of trees and flowers citywide starting in 1892.
The park was named Balboa in 1910 after the Spanish explorer Vasco Nuñez de Balboa. Its most significant development came with the Panama-California Exposition in 1915-16, which introduced the iconic Spanish Colonial Revival architecture and ornamental landscaping seen today.
The park also hosted the California Pacific International Exposition in 1935-36, adding structures like the Old Globe Theatre and International Cottages. Designated a National Historic Landmark and a cultural district, Balboa Park serves as the centerpiece of arts, culture, and recreation in San Diego, featuring museums, gardens, theaters, and walking trails for millions of visitors annually.
