The Barbacane del Castello Aragonese is the best-preserved surviving part of the former Aragonese Castle of Sassari, a fortress built in the early 14th century to strengthen Aragonese control over the city.

Constructed within the castle’s moat between the 15th century and 1503, the barbican was designed to adapt the defenses to the growing use of firearms and artillery. Although the main castle was demolished in the late 19th century, archaeological excavations uncovered the underground barbican and its defensive passages.

The structure consists of two superimposed corridors, including a lower level equipped with numerous firing positions for arquebuses, offering a rare glimpse into medieval and Renaissance military engineering. Today, the Barbacane is an important historical attraction in the heart of Sassari, preserving part of the city’s medieval heritage and helping visitors understand the defensive system of a fortress that once dominated the urban landscape.
