The estate, located near Barrytown and overlooking the Hudson River, features rolling lawns, woodlands, and formal gardens originally developed in the early 1800s by Janet Livingston Montgomery, widow of Revolutionary War General Richard Montgomery. The property includes a Federal-style house expanded in the mid-1800s with Classical Revival elements designed by architect Alexander Jackson Davis.
The landscaped grounds were influenced by Andrew Jackson Downing, incorporating arboretums, scenic trails, carriage roads, and various garden features like gazebos and rustic seating for viewing natural beauty such as mountains, river, and a nearby waterfall.
The gardens have been restored to highlight their historical significance, provide hiking and picnic spaces, and serve as a serene public area supporting Bard College’s educational mission and community engagement.
