Bastione di Malta is a historic coastal fortification in Lamezia Terme, Calabria, overlooking the Gulf of Sant’Eufemia.

It was built around 1550 on the orders of the Spanish Viceroy of Naples, Pedro de Toledo, as part of a defensive system designed to protect the Calabrian coast from pirate raids and maritime attacks. The fortress later became associated with the Knights of Malta, from whom it takes its name.

Its thick defensive walls, compact truncated-pyramid shape, and square tower made it a strong military structure, and much of its original design has survived to the present day. Today, Bastione di Malta is valued as an important historical landmark that reflects the region’s military and maritime past. Its strategic seaside location and notable preservation make it a distinctive attraction for visitors interested in Calabria’s history and architecture.
