Bastionsgarten
Eichstätt, Germany, Germany
Bastionsgarten, also known as Hortus Eystettensis or Eichstätter Garten, is a historic Renaissance botanical garden in Eichstätt, Bavaria, Germany, laid out in the early 17th century on the bastions of Willibaldsburg Castle overlooking the Altmühl River valley by Prince-Bishop Johann Konrad von Gemmingen.
Commissioned to showcase global plants collected by the bishop, it inspired the famous 1613 book Hortus Eystettensis with detailed copperplate engravings by Basilius Besler, marking Germany's first botanical garden outside Italy and a pinnacle of early modern horticulture.
Replanted in 1998 using Besler's illustrations to recreate over 1,000 species across eight terraces, the site offers guided tours on select Sundays, serene paths amid herbs, ornamentals, and exotics, and panoramic views in a peaceful setting without crowds.
